Dam was born in Kolkata to a Bengali Hindu family. She attended Loreto School and later Vidyasagar College in Kolkata graduating with a degree in Chemistry. Subsequently she also earned a postgraduate degree in Chemistry at the Rajabazar Science College of the University of Calcutta.
Dam began her acting career in the mega serial 'Tithir Atithi". Paoli had come into the focus after the success of Kaalbela directed by Gautam Ghose. After that she was selected for a role in Italo Spinelli's film 'Choli Ke Peeche' after Shahana Goswami and Nandana Sen backed out of the project citing excess nudity involved. Paoli made her debut with the Bengali film Agnipariksha in 2006. She was also featured in Shob Charitro Kalponik alongside Bipasha Basu. In 2012, she made her Bollywood debut in Hate Story.
